5 Events to Keep You Cultured this Week (July 23-29)

Article by: Vancouver Magazine

Whether “culture” for you means going to a museum or binge-watching sitcoms, we’ll culture you up real good this week.

1. Beet the Odds

July 25

Attention, The Office nerds: all of that time you’ve spent mindlessly watching and rewatching all nine seasons is about to finally pay off. The Blarney Stone is hosting a The Office Trivia Night this Wednesday, and your borderline-obsessive knowledge of the show could earn you a lot more than a Dundie (as in, The Office swag and Blarney gift cards). You might even meet your Jim. Or your Pam. Or your Dwight.

When: Wednesday, July 25, 8 p.m.
Where: The Blarney Stone 216 Carrall St.
Cost: Free to compete
More Info: blarneystone.ca

2. Kick-start Your Pride

July 27

The Pride Parade is still a few weeks away, but luckily the Vancouver Pride Society has year-round events so you can get your pride fix. The Vancouver Pride Premiere is a seven-hour long, 360-degree street party that forms a rainbow doughnut of sorts around the Vancouver Art Gallery. This event features pride classics like live music, dancing and a runway competition, but also ping pong, a hula hoop zone and a special sparkle station. Get your glitter on early!

When: Friday, July 27, 5 p.m. – 11:59 p.m.
Where: Vancouver Art Gallery, 750 Hornby St.
Cost: Free
More Info: facebook.com

3. Bring Your Own Story

July 28

Remember that time you went hot air ballooning? Or the time you were almost electrocuted? What about the time you got lost in Costco? Whatever your story, bring it to life in this hands-on workshop led by Haida artist SGidGang.xaal, Shoshannah Greene. This workshop is for artists of all abilities—there’s no experience required. Greene’s MOA animation piece, Yahguudang—Respect, is comprised of gorgeous animal vignettes that combine hand-drawn animation with watercolour. Get some insight into Greene’s artistic process and dive in to painting and drawing your own stories in this all-day workshop.

When: Saturday, July 28, 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Where: Museum of Anthropology, 6393 NW Marine Dr.
Cost: From $30
More Info: moa.ubc.ca

4. Get Some Lime Time

July 28-29

A parade? Check. Craft market? Check. Live music, street food and amusement park rides? Check, check and check. Get into the contagious rhythm of Caribbean culture at the Caribbean Days Festival, a 2-day romp jam-packed with high-energy performances, good eats, and plenty of socializing (liming) about. This festival is the largest Caribbean celebration in B.C. The 2018 festival theme, “It’s a We ‘Ting,” celebrates community, diversity, and coming together—it’s a musical, culinary and multi-cultural party you won’t want to miss.

When: July 28-29
Where: Waterfront Park, 200 Esplanade W., North Vancouver
Cost: Free

5. Test Your Limits

July 29 – August 2

If you’re in the mood for some fresh avant-garde theatre, check out LIMITS, a one-woman show by local theatre artist Kimiko Clark. This is Clark’s first solo show, and incorporates dance into theatre in an intimate and somewhat unconventional space. If Kimiko’s Grotowski-based training is any indication, audiences can look forward to a production that relies almost solely on the skill of the actor—that means few (or zero) minimal set pieces, costumes and props.

When: July 29-30 and August 1-2, 7:30 p.m.
Where: Russian Hall, 600 Campbell Ave.
Cost: $20
