You could spend a lot of money in Hollywood going on movie star homes tours and going into Ripley’s or the wax museum. But you don’t have to. In fact, you can skip those expensive guided tours, walk right past all those ticket counters and cheesy attractions and still have a great time.

Try these totally free activities to have a ton of fun without spending a ton of money.

Take a Walk On Hollywood Boulevard: There’s a lot to do and see on the boulevard, and most of it is free. That includes the stars on the Walk of Fame, the handprints and footprints at the Chinese Theatre and strolling around Hollywood and Highland.You won’t need to pay someone else to show you around if you use the Hollywood Boulevard guide.

Watch a Footprint or Walk of Fame Star Ceremony: When a celebrity gets a star on the Walk of Fame or gets their handprints and footprints cast in cement at the Chinese Theatre, they have to show up. And a few of their glitterati pals usually come along with them. These events don’t happen every day, but there’s no charge to watch when they do.

02 of 08 Be In a Studio Audience

How fun is this? You can be in the studio audience of some popular television shows for free. All you need to do is make a reservation and have enough time to stay until they’re done, and you can be in the studio audience for selected sitcoms, talk shows, and game shows.

03 of 08 Stalk the Hollywood Sign

You can see the Hollywood Sign from all over town. In fact, you could probably spend a whole day just driving around to all the places where you can see it.

You can’t get close enough to touch it, and it’s getting harder to access the hiking trails that take you closer to it, but you can see the sign from a lot of places. You find them all in this guide: How to Stalk the Hollywood Sign.

04 of 08 Free Performances at the Hollywood Bowl

To enjoy an evening concert at the Hollywood Bowl, you’ll have to buy a ticket. If you want to hear the music and see the place for free, it’s a little-known fact that some of their morning rehearsals are open to the public. The only way to find out when that will happen is to call 323-850-2000. The Edmund D. Edelman Hollywood Bowl Museum is also free to visit.

If you’d rather buy a ticket and go to The Bowl in the evening (which is a fun thing to do), you’ll find all you need to know about in this guide to the Hollywood Bowl. For some concerts, prices start at less than $20.

05 of 08 Pay Your Last Respects to Departed Celebrities

Hollywood Forever Cemetery, which is just behind the famous Paramount Studios, is visitor-friendly and free. They even offer maps of the stars’ final resting places.

Other cemeteries where lots of celebrities are buried are also free to visit. They include:

Legendary Forest Lawn also holds the remains of famous people from all eras. You can use the interactive map at Seeing-Stars.com to find them.

Marilyn Monroe’s remains are hidden away in the Westwood Village Memorial Park. You can find it and more Marilyn-related sites in California in this guide.

06 of 08 Take a Self-Guided Driving Tour

This turn by turn Hollywood driving tour will take you to all the sights. The guide part is free, but you’ll have to pay for your own gasoline.

Among them are the Jim Henson Muppets studio and a hot dog stand with the longest lines in Los Angeles.

07 of 08 Check Out the Farmers Market

The Farmers Market may not be in Hollywood proper, but it feels like it belongs there. You’ll pay to park (unless you buy something and get free parking validation), but walking around the market is free and so are the samples that some of the food stalls hand out.

If you get hungry and end up spending money, that’s all on you. So is the credit card bill if you wander into The Grove next door and go shopping.
